The report is out and Child Care Aware of America (CCAoA) have just confirmed the worst. Childcare costs are rising and eating up a significant portion of the American family’s income.
And it’s exacerbated by the dwindling supply of child care and family day care centers in America.
Year on year, CCAoA have been compiling the average cost of childcare per state and this year, the stark rise in childcare costs.

Top 10 Least Affordable States for Center-Based Infant Care
Washington remains to be the most expensive state to find infant care in a childcare center, with the childcare cost taking up 54.5% of a single parent’s income and 17% out of a married couple’s income.
Meanwhile South Dakota is the most affordable state to find center-based infant care where it’ll only eat up 24.6% of a single parent’s income and 7.8% for a married couple.
Top 10 Least Affordable States for Family Child Care-based Infant Care
Family child care providing infant care charge the most in New York, accounting for almost half of a single parent’s and 13.7% of a married couple’s income.
In terms of infant care, whether it’s center or family daycare, South Dakota remains the most affordable state to be in. Comparing what it charges for infant care against the median income of a single parent household, it only takes up about 18.2% of a single parent and 5.8% of a married couple’s income to afford a family child care-based infant care.
Top 10 Least Affordable States for Center-Based Toddler Care
Have a toddler? Nebraska parents pay the most in terms of toddler care in a center-based setting with the fees taking up 50.9% of a single parent’s income and 16% of a married couple’s income.
Meanwhile, South Dakota still is the most inexpensive in terms of toddler care, with fees only amounting to 24.6% of a single parent’s income and 7.8% for a married couple.
However, there was no childcare cost data collected for California and Colorado.
Top 10 Least Affordable States for Family Child Care-based Toddler Care
New York parents are paying the most when it comes to toddler care in family child care settings. The cost accounts for 49% of a single parent’s income and 13.7% for a married couple’s.
South Dakota still is the most inexpensive, charging only $5,491 on average, taking 18.2% of a single parent’s annual income and 5.8% of a married couple’s income.

As childcare seats and businesses continue to close, expect childcare prices to continually rise.
